News 2010
Once
again we forge ahead into a
new and exciting year at Designing
Smiles. Looking back at 2009
we once again saw many advances
in the area of technology and
I will share some of those exciting
new advantages with you. We
were also fortunate enough to
make some fantastic improvements
to our facility in the past
year with a number of enhancements
that you will see when you visit
the next time.

Looking
in the Rearview Mirror…2009
What a fantastic year we experienced
in 2009 at Designing Smiles
allowing us to spread our wings
and open our doors to Dentists
from around the Country as we
offered a number of Continuing
Education courses here at our
facility. In November we entertained
15 dentists with varied backgrounds
in Occlusion or “The Bite”
for a weekend of study related
to the jaws and how they must
work in harmony with the teeth.
We were also fortunate enough
to host our first Live Patient
Hands on Continuing Education
course with Dentists bringing
their own patients for one on
one instruction with Dr. Jenkins
and his Team as they treated
in our Designing Smiles clinic.
It was very exciting to see
some of our long term visions
take shape as we began to impact
others in our profession in
a positive way.
The
Greater Louisville Aesthetic
Masters Study Club
continues to grow and prosper
as it redefines the way that
our dental community stays on
top of the profession. GLAM
as it is known, is a group of
progressive dentists from the
Kentuckiana region that meets
monthly in our conference center
presenting and discussing cases
in an effort to ultimately promote
better outcomes for our patients.
Our
Designing Smiles Mission, Give
Faith a Smile, had
another amazing year as we were
able to positively impact the
lives of a number of ladies
by returning them to SMILES.
Now in our 3rd year, the mission
remains that we want to give
back by helping lift some needy
Moms in our community to a higher
level of dental health and Ultimately
a Renewed sense of Self Esteem
so that they may have a better
chance of getting back on track
with their lives.

Accelerating
Forward in 2010
Comprehensive Whole Body Health
As we enter the new year there
is much to be excited about
as we present a fresh perspective
to the way that we approach
our patients care. With much
consideration we have come to
realize that patients today
look to us for a more comprehensive
whole body consideration. The
Oral Cavity is the portal to
the body by which all of our
Nutrition must enter and if
not healthy the entire body
suffers. We also know that there
are so many links between oral
health and Systemic or Overall
health that we must look at
our patients as a whole and
not simply a set of teeth. You
will notice some exciting new
elements involved in your Comprehensive
Exam that will allow us to much
better determine on many levels
the overall needs of each patient.

New
Technology for 2010
As you have come to expect we
are always committed to the
cutting edge of what is leading
dentistry. With this in mind
we have added several new additions
to our already state of the
art facility.
Photography
plays a huge role in patient
education, Doctor-Patient communication,
and at times communication with
3rd party payers such as Insurance.
With this in mind we have upgraded
our Intraoral photography capabilities
with the latest advancements
in Intraoral Cameras. You will
no doubt take a tour of your
mouth sometime soon!
The
Spectra Caries Detection
System allows for us
to wave a wand over the tooth
with the ability to detect cavities
deep in the tooth that are otherwise
undetectable with the naked
eye. The act of “poking”
around on the tooth with a sharp
instrument is no longer accepted
as the standard of care for
determining the health or a
tooth. You will be able to see
in full color on the TV screen
any areas that may present with
cavities.

SLEEPY?....
We are Interested
Over the past year Dr. Jenkins
and the Designing Smiles Team
have spent considerable time
researching the impact of Sleep,
or a lack of, on overall health
and longevity. Our findings
have been shocking as we have
found that poor sleep can have
a major impact on every system
in your body. We have come to
realize that dentistry can and
should play a major role in
the recognition and treatment
of Sleep related disorders such
as Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).
Many of our patients suffer
with snoring and or OSA and
are unaware of the seriousness
of this condition. Many of the
spouses or partners of these
LOUD sleepers suffer their own
misery trying to sleep in the
presence of noise louder than
a lawn mower which many times
results in separate sleeping
quarters.

So
what if my
teeth are worn…
Over the past 10 years Dr. Jenkins
has traveled the country studying,
teaching and treating a variety
of conditions related to worn,
chipped, broken teeth in an
effort to better understand
the relationship of the jaws
and teeth, referred to as the
“Occlusion”.
Tooth wear and Bite problems
are extremely prevalent in our
population and so often lead
to the breakdown and or loss
of teeth. With this in mind,
you will notice a concerted
effort as you visit to recognize
the early signs of problems
before they become major issues
to your dental health.
--------------------------------------------
As
always we are extremely proud
to call ourselves “your
dental home” and we look
forward to continuing to provide
the finest environment and treatment
options for you. We will use
2010 to enhance the lives of
all of our patients through
beautiful, functional Smiles.
